What more can be said about this spectacle that hasn't been filmed or photographed, so far - well probably everything. We know so little, and yet have had such amazing experiences with this faunal event that the future looks particularly bright for this experience. There is much more to this experience than meets the eye and thus it is separately presented. ![]() In 2004 Blue Wilderness, Jeep Clothing and Adventure Accessories joined forces to bring the world Sardine Run 2004. Six boats spending just under 1000 hours at sea as well as a fixed wing aircraft and two gyrocopters achieved 160 hours of aerial survey. In all, eight film teams were facilitated and over 60 clients. South Africa's scientists were the major beneficiary of this partnership with the first ever Sardine Run GIS survey. The focus of this survey was to monitor the abundance of predators associated with the sardine shoals. ![]() |
South African shark and dolphin specialist from the University of KwaZulu/Natal, Prof. Vic Peddemors, collaborated with the remote imaging department of National Geographic and attached "Crittercam's" to three copper sharks and a thresher shark - all world firsts. The unique footage achieved by putting a camera on a sharks fin and seeing how it interacts with other sharks and sardines will be the subject of further close collaboration with this National Geographic department and Prof. Peddemors in the future. ![]() All of this work was done in the Eastern Cape from Hamburg to Port St Johns and then from Port Edward to Durban in KZN. In all, six different accommodation venues and eight launch sites were used in the most successful Sardine Run ever. The benefit of the 2004 Sardine Run and its value to the Eastern Cape will be felt for many years to come with the broadcast of these productions on the international stage to over 250 million viewers. ![]() |
