Shark Dive and Stay Package

White Shark Ecoventures invites you cage diving with great white sharks in the aptly named "Shark Alley", near the fishing village of Gansbaai, South Africa.

Sharks are quite possibly the world's most feared animals. From the smallest sand shark to the enormous whale shark, they are sleek, muscled, and some are almost as agile as a dolphin. There is no doubt that they are the most evolved predators in the ocean. Row upon row of teeth and capable of sensing the blood of an injured animal from over a kilometre away, its not surprising that they are the most feared creature beneath the waves. And of them all, the Great White is the most awesome.

What we are offering you is the opportunity to dive and meet a Great White Shark, face to face - and on your own terms. Its an education and you will soon learn that this magnificent creature is in fact, highly misunderstood. It is a creature which should be more respected than feared. And if you spend some quality time with us, and with them, you will quickly learn why.

Arrive at our office early morning for a light breakfast. Whilst enjoying coffee and juice we listen to the dive masters briefing regarding the happenings of the day. The videographer that will be filming your experience is also introduced. Once paperwork and briefing has been finalised, we head down to the harbour. Board the boat to enjoy the comfortable 20 minute boat ride out to the anchoring point. We chum the water and once the sharks are around we start to cage dive.

Sharks are surface feeders by nature, ensuring spectacular surface action which often takes place “too close for comfort”!  Surface viewers therefore take the pound seat on our specially designed observation platform, with camera’s close at hand.

From the safety of the boat, you are able to photograph your friend/s in the cage and at the same time follow   the sharks as they move around the boat and cage.  Be careful not to miss out on good photographs.  Breaching often takes place in the high season and if you are not 100% ready, you may miss out on a good picture.

For an entire range of white shark products as well as underwater disposable cameras we recommend that you stop at The Great White Adventure Centre. This is the first building as you enter Gansbaai. At the centre you can buy underwater disposable cameras, rent an underwater digital camera and more. This shop has a huge selection of white shark souvenirs for you to remember your day by. One souvenir that is only available from the White Shark Diving Company though is of course your day trip DVD. The DVD can be purchased after the trip at a cost of R350-00.

We are the only boat in the shark diving industry with specially designed motors which lift completely out of the water, ensuring that the propellers do not harm the sharks in any way. Our boat, cage and life-raft are inspected on an annual basis, ensuring maximum safety for all our passengers.

We make use of a securely structured, galvanized, 5-man steel cage. It is operated with a winch from a sturdy gantry, ensuring effective cage retrieval.

Our surface cage is constructed of re-enforced mild steel and built in accordance with specifications provided by coded welders and registered engineers. It has a convenient port hole for easy photography, as well as a 300mm free-board above the surface, allowing divers to effectively communicate with the Dive Master on the boat.

The diving method used is mostly breath hold.

Occasionally we make use of the hookah system in the cage, meaning that the diving cylinders remain on the boat, since we have 5mm air hoses running into the cage. Cage dimensions are; 2.3m high, 3.0m in length and 1.0m in width. The cage has been carefully designed for the safety of the diver/s as well as the animal. You will therefore find no sharp edges around the cage, ensuring that the sharks are not harmed in any way. Our cage is replaced annually and is inspected by authorities on a regular basis.

Cages have been designed for the safety of the diver as well as the animal. There are no sharp edges on the cage, which may cause injury to a feeding shark. Our cages are replaced annually and regularly inspected by authorities.

Diving is not always guaranteed since we work 10 km out at sea and only know what the shark activity and sea conditions are like once we arrive at the dive site. We are, however, able to continue with diving 95% of the time. It is also known that during certain seasons we encounter sharks that are very cautious and are therefore easily frightened by sound, such as the sound of scuba breathing equipment. To avoid scaring the sharks off as soon as they arrive at the boat, we often commence the diving on snorkel. Should the sharks become more relaxed and confident with having the divers around, we will then switch to scuba. However, diving on scuba is not guaranteed as it all depends on the types of sharks we encounter on each particular tour. It is obviously better to view sharks from the cage on snorkel, than not to get to see the sharks at all.

Diving takes place on a rotational basis, with six divers down at a time. With the new state of the art boat White Shark Ecoventures has from 4-5 Guides on the boat per trip giving you the attention you require for every trip.

The dive gear supplied is a 7 ml wetsuit (ranging from sizes adult small to 3 XL) with booties and hoodie plus mask. We make use of the breath hold method and this has proven to be the best method. Weight belt is also supplied.
